Chiropody and Podiatry

One of the commonest asked questions regarding chiropody and podiatry is; "what is the difference between the two"?

The simple explanation is that there is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist. In the UK, podiatry is the new name for chiropody and it's was changed in 1993. The term podiatrist is used and recognised more internationally.

Podiatrists are healthcare professionals trained to work with problems and conditions associated with the lower limb and feet.

A routine podiatry treatment, for example, may include; foot health assessment, cutting toenails, removing corns & callouses and general foot-care & footwear advice.

Other common foot problems seen by podiatrists include;

  • Fungal nail problems

  • Verrucas and warts

  • Athlete's foot

  • Dry and cracked skin / heels

  • Flat feet / high arches

  • Problems associated with bunions

  • Foot and heel pain

  • Ingrowing toe nails

Podiatrists also work in a preventative and educational capacity helping to prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active as well as giving you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear.
